STUNNING BIG SUR
The name "Big Sur" is derived from the original Spanish-language "el sur grande", meaning "the big south", or from "el país grande del sur", "the big country of the south". The terrain offers stunning views, making Big Sur a popular tourist destination. Most of the 3 million tourists who visit Big Sur each year never leave Highway 1, because the adjacent Santa Lucia Mountain Range is one of the largest roadless areas near a coast in the contiguous United States.
Big Sur is one of the most majestic and thriving fusions of land and sea habitats in the world. Stretching 90 miles long and 20 miles wide, its breadth is host to a number of organisms that endure the daily struggle to survive. The rugged mountainous terrain of the Big Sur coast has had a profound effect on the use of the area and will continue to serve as a limitation on the kinds of activities that can be carried on and the scale of development.
